Few know, apart from avid followers, that South Africa’s Opera singers continue to gain international interest and recognition. On the one hand, local singers are attracting the limelight slowly but surely for their unique and powerful voices. On the other, for their interesting interpretations of opera classics and “home-brewed” performances.
An all the while, behind the scenes of our metropolitan city known as The Mother City, there is a hive of activity as the fascination for opera grows locally too. Many local opera singers, organizers and enthusiasts share their passion for this long-standing performing art and strive to make it more accessible to a larger number of Capetonians. With the help of modern technology for example, classic operas performed in the Opera houses and theatres of Cape Town are translated from Italian or French. These translations are projected on large screens above the stage allowing a larger audience to understand and access the magical world of opera. Another example of spreading the love of opera locally is when Cape Town Opera and its funders get together to take a performance to local schools in the Cape townships from where some of the most interesting of local voices originate.
Delight in a private performance by one of our professional opera singers in a home of Cape Town, be it in the City Bowl or out in a township of Cape Town. The evening, punctuated with the hosting singer’s personal stories and adventures of Opera as well as a light dinner, promises to be enlightening and fun.
