The African Drumming Safari

Half day tour:
Gugulethu: ZAR 695 p.p. (Oct 2011 - Sep 2012)

The African Drumming Safari - Gugulethu
Join our local guide on a tour highlighting the way of life in the urban suburbs of Cape Town known as “townships”. The focus of this experience is on the every day, real life in areas such as Langa, Gugulethu or Khayelitsha.

This includes meeting the people of the area in authentic situations and visiting uplifting self-help projects that boast funky products. Our visits highlight the positive energy and the creativity and give guests the opportunity of learning about socio-economic successes of some of our hosts and this despite the challenges of the past and present. This tour also offers an overview of future developments in the area.

Visits vary and may include the local library, community centre, arts and crafts projects, “Spaza Shops“ (informal stores) and barbers to participate in a genuine every day activity such as hair braiding. These are some of the popular opportunities to exchange with locals.

After the guided tour, guests will have the opportunity of catching further township vibes by participating in a drumming session! With the help and humour of our drumming instructor, even novice drummers will feel the rhythms of African drums at their fingertips!

The African Drumming Safari – Kamandi
Join our local guide on a walk highlighting the way of life in his/her town, which has a definite countryside vibe. Visits vary from tour to tour and include for example stops at the local library, the community or local business centre, a barber, “Spaza Shops“ (informal stores) and a local kindergarten/crèche where guests are involved in an interactive play session with the children. Here the children teach our guests how to participate in a traditional song or a puppet show. These visits are some of the popular opportunities to exchange with locals.

After the guided tour, guests will have the opportunity to catch further township vibes by participating in a drumming session! With the help and humour of our drumming instructor, even novice drummers will feel the rhythms of African drums at their fingertips!

Poetry in the townships

Information:
Kayamandi lies on the outskirts of historical Stellenbosch in the Cape Winelands. As with other townships, Kayamandi bears the harsh traces of apartheid. However today as an established „township“, Kayamandi is open to visitors and tourists from around the world. Due to its proximity to the heart of the Winelands, an inspiring tour of Kayamandi is a perfect way to round off either a city tour or a wine tour.
