History of soccer in South Africa can be traced back to the late 19th century with the first recognized club being formed in 1879. The "Pietermaritzburg County" club consisted solely of European Immigrants and first played against military selections from the occupying British troops. As early as 1882 the Natal Football Association was formed and league competitions started. More and more, soccer spread over the country and today, more than a hundred and twenty years later, South Africa without its many professional soccer clubs and enthusiastic supporters is unimaginable. Although many supporters in Cape Town concentrate on the big two, Santos and Ajax, there are many more clubs “in the backyard” of this beautiful city that deserve recognition. We want to highlight some of them. To some people football is just a silly game where 22 guys run after one ball. For others it is almost everything. On the Cape Town Soccer Tour you will visit big and small soccer clubs in Cape Town. |
