Any trip through Cape wine country is guaranteed to leave you giddy: if the landscape alone doesn’t do it, the refreshments certainly will. But andulela will send you home with more than a bit of wine-lore under your belt and a couple of bottles under your arm. We will introduce you to people who are passionate about taking South African viticulture into the 21st century.T

he art of winemaking has a long and glorious history in South Africa, and particularly in the Cape. More then 90% of all the country’s vineyards are located here; the vast majority sprinkled across the Boland, or Winelands Region, that supports towns like Paarl, Stellenbosch and Franschhoek.

These fertile and breathtakingly beautiful valleys were first cultivated by Dutch and Huguenot settlers in the early 17th century. The combination of perfect Mediterranean weather, favourable soil conditions, and the legacy of the colonial-era wine-masters has made Cape wine a global favourite of many years standing.

For our own unique route through this historic territory, andulela has handpicked some very special wineries, chosen not only for their splendid vintages, but for their forward-thinking attitude towards the social and ecological challenges of wine-farming in the New South Africa.

We therefore have partnered with several socially responsible wine estates such as L’Ormarins that is involved in a truly inspiring community project. Together with two other wineries, they have built a village for their employees, providing not only housing, but transport, day-care for young children, and business-skills seminars for adults. We will learn about this labour of love as we taste their excellent wares.

Most of the wine makers and hosts we visit are among those excluded from climbing the industry ladder during apartheid. This is a superb opportunity to feel their passion and hear their stories that are nothing less than fascinating and punctuated with humour.

The wine estates we visit, such as M’hudi and Stellakaya, allow us to meet with talented women and black wine makers. At Stellekaya, “Home of the Stars” we will meet head winemaker Ntsiki Biyela, and sample her prize-winning red blends. A rising star herself, with a growing reputation internationally, Biyela is the first black female head winemaker in the country, and never less than a gracious hostess.

Amongst our chosen wineries we also have the ‘greenest’ wine farm on the continent. Committed to the preservation of indigenous flora, energy efficiency, and recycling, this is one of only three wine farms in the world to have achieved ‘carbon neutral’ status.

Although itineraries vary, each itinerary boasts a hands-on wine blending session where clients make their own wine blends with expert guidance and savour exclusive wine tastings with wine makers and wine experts themselves!
